Luck Didn't Call My Name

Scott Wilson Annual Dinner is an event where all its staff is waiting for. I had mine last year. Though it was a smaller scale but everyone is happy... I hope. My trip to Hong Kong this time around coincides with the Hong Kong branch dinner as well. Well, Scott Wilson Hong Kong is a generous lot. I received my Hong Kong angpow from the project manager, admin manager, and even their driver. Wait a minute, did I say angpow? Sorry, I forgot the "s". It supposed to be angpows! They have a belief. Good thing comes in double figure. So is the angpow. In total I got 6 angpows from Scott Wilson Hong Kong.

Even after some "professional" high management argument between the two offices, I was thinking the office here will sing Alanis Morissette's "Uninvited" to me on this dinner. Anyhow, I was wrong. Upon my arrival, I was glad the receptionist managed to find my name on the list. Looks like they really invited me.

The world is flat. Just when you are thinking who are we going meet in this dinner, man.... Wala... Here come a friend you least expected to see. Not from Malaysia but from UK! What can I say? The dinner here is just like the ordinary Chinese wedding dinner. Just that there is no bride or bridegroom. Here, the waiter serves food at a speed of light. So is the eating and the plate collecting processes. The food is gone within minutes it was served on the plate. My God, you just need to be there to see how fast and furious they can be. I even lost to a girl who sat beside me and she is just half of my size. I asked her in a cheeky manner,

"No lunch today?"

To put matter worse, the MC played game in between while you are eating. Just imagine, you trying to put a piece of chicken into your mouth only for the MC to tell you that the quiz has started. Just when you try to gobble up the mushroom, one guy throws an envelope asking your team to spot the not in 3 different pictures. And just when you are about to have a sip of the soup, the MC asked you to look at the powerpoint filled with hundred words informing you game instruction. In the end, I have to go to the toilet. Why? Too pissed off!

In my family, I have two brothers. In Hong Kong, I managed to find my lost sister. Meet her. Au Yong Hiu Tung. My Hong Kong sister. Sometimes, coincidence does happen. My Malaysia colleague who went there with me shares the same Chinese surname with the staff there, Chua. Chua for Chua Soi Lek. To make thing more coincident, they even share the same English name.. Jeff.

In our life, we met mean and cunning people. Occasionally, good people comes from the unlikely source. I am glad that all my trip to each countries, I managed to meet some nice and helpful people who you can truly call them a friend. Though they may come from different background, it's nice to see that's there are people who can prove Louie Armstrong's song true.

Lucky draw is what everyone is looking forward in every event. So is here. They have a total of 30++ lucky draw. What is 30 ++? Well, they have 30 main prizes and the "++" is from the director's wallet. Yup. And they are not being voluntary but rather than "forced". One of the director even used the phrase from Robin Hood,

"I steal from the rich and give to the poor!"

Man, wish you are not the rich but the poor on that night. Or else, each directors has to fork out at least two or three angpows from their wallet. One angpow costs around HKD 1000! Those who had experience with previous dinner thought of putting just HKD 50 before they come to this dinner. However, they were wrong. The MC squeezed them into juices. Those who has emptied their wallet needs to take out their credit card or sign "IOU" notes! To the Hongkie, it's pay back time. After all this while, you angmoh people siphoned away our money. It's time we take some back.

I was praying with high hope that I will win at least one draw. Any prize will do. However, luck was not on my side. I got nothing but a fulled belly at the end of the day. I suspect they must have taken out my number. Anyhow, I had a marvellous evening. What most important is that I got the chance to experience the culture of others which I think can't be measured with money. But still, I should have won at least one of the director's angpow!!!!
